Day 3 on site

I have made it through another succesful day on site! I have fully cleaned my skeleton and taken its photo and plotted it onto the site plan. I have started to fill in the skeleton form (and they have copies in English!!!) and learning to new skills along the way. We have to do field anthropology and describe how the bones are in what position and things like that. It was very interesting to learn and get to carry out more tomorrow :)
Today the mayor of Mechelen came on to site and I got to meet him, to me he looked like a normal man in a suit! They don't dress up like the ones we have here. But was funny watching him walk around a muddy site dressed up nicely!!! It rained in the morning although it was dry in the afternoon so was starting to dry when he got there. By the time I finished it was nice sunny weather! He used to be some minister of Belgium which explains why people were acted strange when he came on to site. I had a nice conversation with him about whether I was a student or not, if I was enjoying in my time there and that it was great as its showing the public archaeology!!! This was all carried out in English.
I am getting use to the 6am starts and the buses full of school kids but looking forward to sleeping at the weekend.
Tomorrow I will lift the skeleton and then start on my next one, hopefully I will be quicker on the next burial.

Day 2 on site

Today was day 2 and they let me back on site :D I sorted out one problem with my burial and got to lift the intruding skull and the bones surrounding it. Now I can get back to the task in hand and excavate the original burial!
The people on site are nice and they are holding conversations with me in English as I cannot speak flemish/dutch! There is someone from Brighton (originally from Argentina) and a canadian so we speak English amongst our selves when the others are nattering away in Dutch. Although they do play alot of Michael Jackson so at least I understand the music!
Was going to put up pictures tonight of the area I am working in but too tired to get my camera and lead!!! Its all these 6am starts or 5am if you are in England :P :P

Off to watch My Family before I go to bed.
Night all

First day on site

Yesterday I made it to Mechelen and learnt the buses of Belgium! I walked around the the town and found out where the site was and then found a doughnut shop!!!! Then I got the buses back and had an early night!

Today, my first proper day on site and it was interesting, different to archaeology back home! I found a skeleton that I can excavate and it looked simple enough until I was finding the legs. There were loose bones over the top of where I was tracking the legs so I had to excavate them first. Simple... wrong! There bones then covering them and so on. Now I am left with lots bones every where and they are mainly leg bones! I am still uncovering them and then see what will happen next. Hopefully I will get most of it done tomorrow!

Off for an early night as I am up at 6 and out the door at 6:45 to be on site around 8! The joys of being an archaeologist in training!!!

I have arrived safely in Beglium after a rather bumpy landing lol! Settling in well and found out bus to the site is at 7:05... I didn't know this time existed! Tomorrow I'm off to find the site and have a mooch around the area.
